AwardsAIA North Carolina Tower Award; Adaptive re-use
of an historic church building (1993)
DTW Architects renovated this historic 25,000-square-foot church in 1991, transforming it into the home of the St. Joseph’s Historic Foundation and the Hayti Heritage Center. Originally built in 1891, the three-story structure was restored in accordance with federal historic preservation guidelines.
The project introduced a light-filled lobby between the original sanctuary and the education building, with public access through entry courtyards on either side. It also added galleries, music and dance studios, photography, visual arts and clay studios, and public meeting rooms — establishing the building as a vibrant cultural hub.
