Grace Lutheran Church
Location: Durham, NC
Date: 1989
DTW Architects designed a sanctuary addition for this church on a small site in a residential neighborhood; the small original sanctuary was renovated as a fellowship hall. DTW designed a modern, light-filled worship space with warm wood floor and structural elements. There are three items in the chancel: the cross, the alter, and the pulpit, all designed by DTW Architects to complement the space and contribute to its spirituality. The wall at the front of the sanctuary is split-faced block laid in varying amounts in and out of the wall, both for its visual interest and its acoustical qualities. To add continuity, the railings from the earlier church were reused on the balcony.
