DTW Architects partnered with Duke School on two major projects. The first consolidated the school’s two campuses into one, requiring the construction of six new buildings and the renovation of three existing ones. The design reflects the rural character of the surroundings, featuring metal roofs, clerestories, and abundant connections between indoor and outdoor spaces. In support of the school’s project-based learning philosophy, the academic buildings incorporate light-filled central atriums for group projects, lunch, discussion, and flexible, open academic areas. With no corridors, every space becomes a potential learning environment, while naturally finished glued laminated timber structural members add warmth and texture.
The second project focused on expanding opportunities for creativity and technical programming. The result was a 14,000-square-foot facility housing a multipurpose space with a stage and seating for 300, a music room, a clean lab, a materials lab (makerspace), and several offices. The project also included associated site improvements and parking.
