DTW Architects designed this addition and renovation of an existing school building for a charter school that will eventually serve about 600 students. The addition was placed so the completed building forms an inner courtyard with the original 1920s building and 1950s wings. This addition relocated the main entrance to a side street and provides a more modern and welcoming gateway for students and parents.

DTW achieved a sustainable project, chiefly by reusing the old buildings, but also by incorporating LED lights, daylighting, and 17 SEER heat pumps, among other improvements.
Maintaining historic characteristics – high ceilings, wood floors, historic-looking windows and wood trim - was important to both DTW and the owner. For example, a lay-in ceiling was added only in the center of classrooms where it concealed ductwork; this allowed the original room height to be exposed. This project was completed with historic tax credits, and DTW handled that process.
