Master Plan – Duke School

DTW Architects worked with Fielding-Nare International (architects) to create a Master Plan for Duke School. Together, over the course of many meetings, principals of the two firms led a group of Duke School administrators and staff in thinking about how they wanted to use their spaces in educating pre-K to 8th-grade students. How should the design influence the education that takes place there? How would the inside and outside be connected? How open would learning spaces be to more public areas? How many grades and classes should be in each building? What connections should there be between buildings?

The Master Plan addressed both current and long-range needs of the campus. It included moving the lower school (Pre-K to Grade 3), located on another site several miles away, onto the upper school (Grades 4-8) campus; renovations of existing buildings and their functions; placement of six entirely new buildings; and location of drives to accommodate separation of older and younger children as well as parent drop-off requirements.
