DTW Architects designed this 8,000 SF fellowship hall-classroom addition for a congregation that had been on the same site since the mid-1700s. The existing church building was constructed in the mid-twentieth century, and the existing fellowship hall was in a cramped basement. The congregation wanted an enlarged gathering space with modern kitchen facilities and additional Sunday-school classrooms; also desired were improvements in the building’s accessibility. DTW designed this 2-story addition to complement the architecture of the existing sanctuary. The addition and sanctuary frame a new entry courtyard, which provides handicap accessibility. The upper floor of the addition, housing classrooms, is on the same level as the sanctuary, and because of the sloping site, the lower level fellowship hall opens onto a new patio area. The addition also includes a new elevator for improved accessibility.
