DTW Architects designed a significant addition and complete renovation of this church on a tight urban site. Originally built in the 1920s, additions had been cobbled onto the original sanctuary in the 1950s and 1980s. Various sections of the building were from one to three stories, but there were eight different floor levels.
DTW creatively inserted an atrium addition into the last open space on the property and in doing so, drew together the various existing pieces of the campus into a coherent whole. Light now spills out of this dramatic space into adjacent areas of the existing building. This project added 13,000 SF of new space to the existing 30,000 SF building: in addition to the atrium, a fellowship hall and commercial-grade kitchen, a commons area, a music room and additional classrooms.
