DTW Architects created this design for a major addition to an existing rural elementary school with an expanding population. The L-shaped addition placed the larger mass — the media center, and art and music rooms — at one end, and the smaller mass — the classroom wing — near the main entry. This provided the facility with an impressive new entryway that directs the visitor inside. Existing fieldstone was taken from a demolished building on-site and used for the column wraps on the connecting canopy. Numerous sustainable design features were incorporated into this project, including daylighting and the use of regional and recycled materials.
