DTW Architects designed a significant addition and complete renovation of this church on a tight downtown site. The Sanctuary was re-built in 1962 – an earlier one had burned – and various additions had been built in the 1950s and early 2000s. DTW completely renovated the existing sanctuary, education and fellowship wings (45,000 SF), and designed a 6,000 SF addition that provided much needed choir and meeting spaces.

A new lobby connects the existing building with the addition, showcases the original exterior of the building, and with its full-height glass, serves as a beacon when lit at night. The addition also incorporates a monumental stair that meets current exiting requirements.

A town alley bisected the property; this required re-routing the alleyway around the addition and a long process to procure town approval. The property is in an historic district and as such the addition also required town approval. In addition, there were accessibility issues which were primarily addressed with the addition of an elevator in the addition.
